Synopsis: The author begins his account with his childhood, but concentrates on the years between 1939 and 1949 – the years of his experience with the Holocaust. Edmund Goldenburg began his writing in 1985 with the intent of sharing it only with his family, in order for them to learn and perhaps understand. With encouragement the story grew and became a more public testimonial of those terrible years.
From the Back Cover: "...And then came the Germans who started separating us, obviously choosing the men. When I pleaded to stay with Mother, one said the ominous words, 'You must live.' And so Mother and Lizzi left with a mass of people; I still remember watching how they disappeared slowly in the crowd, the mass of humanity in a cloud of dust. I watched for the last sight of my family's color, following a color on a blouse or whatever it was. And they disappearedforever. We found out later they were loaded on a train.... And I was left alone."
