Description:

Important history by this chronicler, sometimes referred to as the "Tacitus of England" for his moral perspective which he shared with ancient historians. Some scuffing to covers; darkening and soiling to contents. Some underlinings from centuries past. Title page repaired with backing and then placed on a stub. Page 33-40 omitted as noted but with no loss of contents. A blank page follows p. 139. Relates the lives of William the First, William the Second, and Henrie the First. Very Good. Illustrations, Index, if any, are included in black and white. Each page is checked manually before printing. As this reprint is from very old book, there could be some missing or flawed pages, but we always try to make the book as complete as possible. Fold-outs, if any, are not part of the book. If the original book was published in multiple volumes then this reprint is of only one volume, not the whole set. This paperback book is SEWN, where the book block is actually sewn (smythe sewn/section sewn) with thread before binding which results in a more durable type of paperback binding. Book Description J. Debrett, London, 1804. First edition: quarto; hardcover, quarter-bound in green cloth with gilt spine-titling; 448pp., untrimmed with wide margins on laid paper, with an Appendix and Index (lxiipp.), an engraved portrait frontispiece and three other plates likewise. Rebound: shaken; boards well-rubbed with some bubbling of the cloth on the upper board; corners mildly bumped and edges lightly worn; foxing and embrowning to the preliminaries; many marginal notations throughout in ink and pencil, especially on the endpapers. Laid in: many leaves of notes and other marginalia. Good, withal. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. The workbook of an active Herald, this tome - despite all of its bumps and bruises - shows all of the intricacy and meticulous care required of a member of the College of Arms. Added to the volume are extracts, carefully inked-in from other authorities, and extensions to the indices and appendix incorporating new references created since the date of publication. Other copies of this "herald's manual" - scarce in the 1805 second edition, but even rarer in this 1804 release - may look prettier than this one, but you just know that this copy was sent out into the field to do business, rather than simply decorating an office shelf. There really is no better way than this to get into the mind of the workaday herald!. Seller Inventory # 76845
