Synopsis: Explains how the heart and circulatory system work and examines how high blood pressure and a high fat diet can contribute to heart disease. Also discusses ways of improving health with proper diet and exercise.
From School Library Journal:
Gr 5-8-- The titles of these four books lead readers to expect personal stories about people with the diseases or handicaps, but they are merely encyclopedia articles in book form. Organization is the same in all: the anatomy and physiology of the part of the body affected, types of diseases, treatments, how patients adjust their lives, and prevention if applicable. The text is comprised of several paragraphs of information in boxes and in different type size. The best feature is the full-color illustrations that consist of clear, easy-to-read diagrams and photographs. A one-page glossary and index give only rudimentary information. In Diabetes , the explanation of how to recognize the symtoms of a hypoglycemic attack is on two separate pages in different sections, and neither is clear. These heavily illustrated volumes are more attractive and current than Blindess by Malcolm E. Weiss and Diabetes by Sarah R. Riedman (both Watts, 1980; o.p.). The information is, however, readily available in other sources. --Martha Gordon, South Salem Lib., NY
