About this Item

12mo. 288pp. Fifth edition. Illustrated with four chromolithographed plates. First published in 1844, Roquette's collection of moral stories for children is drawn largely from Biblical sources, though several are derived from fables, and one short entry is drawn from a Portuguese tall tale about a fountain in Sintra. The long history of Portuguese migration to France resulted in a fairly active Portuguese publishing presence there. Aillaud was the publisher of the famous tortured language instruction book, O Novo guia da conversação em francês e português, which became the basis for Mark Twain's English as She Is Spoke. Light spotting and soiling throughout, else a very good copy in a contemporary calf binding which is quite rubbed and with upper rear hinge split. Bookseller Inventory # 23931
