Large folding hand-colored map printed on newspaper with additional title in top margin "The Rebellion As It Was and As It Is". Map size: 41 x 29 1/2 inches. One of a series of detailed, large format maps published approximately yearly by the H. H. Lloyd & Co. under the same title but showing the progress of the conflict using colored areas of territory gained from the rebels; in this case, since January 1, 1861 to February 1, 1864. Areas still held by the Confederacy are shown in red with areas gained from the Confederacy shown in yellow. Territory belonging to the Union at the beginning of the war is shown in green. Important battlefield sites are marked with red lines and strategic places are marked with red dots. At this stage of the war, the territory lost by the rebels included most of Tennessee, northern Virginia, southern Kentucky, southern Missouri, most of the lower Mississippi River valley, southern Florida, and coastal areas of the eastern seaboard and Gulf of Mexico. *** Condition: This large, fragile map has been archivally mounted on Japanese paper for long-term use and preservation. There is some chipping to edges with some areas of loss along old fold lines and intersections, notably in Arkansas west of Memphis, a couple spots along the North and South Carolina border, scattered areas in Mississippi, Missouri and Illinois, and blank areas near the main title, which have been recolored in matching hues (sounds worse that it looks). Requests for photos welcome. Bookseller Inventory #
