Synopsis: A highly illustrated miniature picture book which is written for children but has adult appeal.
From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 2 A cold, unpleasant story about lonely Thelonius, a mouse who is an only child. Thelonius tries to win the attention of his parents, but they repeatedly tell him they're too busy for him. When cousin Charlie (who has 25 brothers and sisters) comes for an overnight visit, Thelonious is delighted. However, he soon discovers that he doesn't like having to share, and when he sees how meager Charlie's posessions are, he decides it's better to have his material possessions and be an only child. This questionable philosophy is never addressed; nor is the fact that Thelonius still needs companionshipand it's unlikely that his parents are suddenly going to find time for him. While some of the pastel illustrations are crisp and clever and contain amusing details, those of Thelonius' hammer-and-saw wielding mother (her hobby is woodworking) are frightening. Worst of all, though, is pathetic-looking Thelonius, who is destined to be a lonely only for a long time to come. Trev Jones, ``School Library Journal''
