About this Item

What more is there to say about "Lonesome Dove" beyond that it is an enduring and compelling work that has more than stood the test of time? First editions, especially if they are signed or inscribed, still command premiums on the collectors market. I have seen and/or sold a number of copies over the years and this one is the most attractive and best preserved. It is a first edition, THIRD printing, binding clean and tight, DJ whole, unchipped, unclipped and unmarked. (Number line starts with "3"The usual crease/concavity that mars this heavy book is missing, -- the spine is straight. The error on p. 621 -- "none" for "done" was apparently never corrected in later editions, because it is present on this copy as well. Original price of $18.95 on top front flyleaf of the DJ. The book is inscribed in ink by McMurtry to a friend, on the front flyleaf, as follows: "For ----- , Hope you enjoy this something (?) tale of the oil patch. Best, Larry McMurtry." The edges are slightly soiled, indicated that the novel was read (albeit with great care) by the original owner, who donated it to a charity book sale, which is how I obtained it. Serious scans on request -- the stock illustration with the sticker on the front cover indicating the book won the Pulitzer Prize was NOT affixed to this copy. There is a small 1/4" horizontal shadow extending along the back and front of the spine for about one inch, and is covered by the DJ. Due to the heft of the book, additional postage will be required for international or special handling. Bookseller Inventory # 1404113

About this title

Set in the late-nineteenth century, this novel chronicles a cattle drive from Texas to Montana, and follows the lives of Gus and Call, the cowboys heading the drive, Gus's woman, Lorena, and Blue Duck, a sinister Indian renegade

Larry McMurtry, in books like The Last Picture Show, has depicted the modern degeneration of the myth of the American West. The subject of Lonesome Dove, cowboys herding cattle on a great trail-drive, seems like the very stuff of that cliched myth, but McMurtry bravely tackles the task of creating meaningful literature out of it. At first the novel seems the kind of anti-mythic, anti-heroic story one might expect: the main protagonists are a drunken and inarticulate pair of former Texas Rangers turned horse rustlers. Yet when the trail begins, the story picks up an energy and a drive that makes heroes of these men. Their mission may be historically insignificant, or pointless--McMurtry is smart enough to address both possibilities--but there is an undoubted valor in their lives. The result is a historically aware, intelligent, romantic novel of the mythic west that won the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
