About this Item

Illustrated by H. Hudson Rodmell. New York: Harcourt Brace & Co., (1923). Octavo, cloth. 220 pages. Covers lightly worn, but still about very good. Signed by David W. Bone. First American Edition. "The purpose of this book is to familiarize the reader with the outward appearance of representative types of [modern steam] vessels so that they may be recognized on occasion, and to offer a lookoutman's comments on their character and habits and tempers." (the Introduction). Captain Sir David Bone, noted captain and shipmaster, was born at Glasgow in 1874 and went to sea at sixteen in the City of Florence, a full-rigged sailing ship of about 1200 tons. Joining the Anchor Line in 1899, he rose to become Commodore Master of the fleet, serving in two World Wars, and eventually commanding transatlantic ocean liners of the modern era.
