About this Item

Quarto. XVI, [2], 564, VIII, [2], 531pp. Uncut. Original red cloth with gold lettering and decoration on front covers and spines. Frontispiece in each volume protected with a tissue guard. Fascinating work being a two part biography written by Winston Churchill of his father, the Victorian politician Lord Randolph Churchill. From 1903 until 1905, Churchill was engaged in writing the biography of his father which was published in 1906 and received much critical acclaim. However, filial devotion caused him to soften some of his father's less attractive aspects. Theodore Roosevelt, who had known Lord Randolph, reviewed the book as "a clever, tactful and rather cheap and vulgar life of that clever, tactful and rather cheap and vulgar egotist". Some historians suggest Churchill used the book in part to vindicate his own career and in particular to justify crossing the floor. This work is profusely illustrated with 18 b/w and color photographic reproductions of portraits and documents (some being folded). The two-volume set is housed in a full red cloth slipcase from a later edition, with gold lettering and decoration on front cover. Slight soiling and rubbing on bindings. Lower front corner of second volume bumped (not affecting pages). Some foxing on very first and very last pages of each volume, and on paper edges. Previous owner's inscription on free front endpaper of first volume, and previous owner's name, dated 1906, on both free front endpapers. Slipcase in overall very good, bindings in good+, interior in good+ to very good condition. Bookseller Inventory # 27894
