About this Item

This is a matched set of three Houghton-Mifflin 12mos (though some might say "small octavos"), of the second, revised edition with new author Foreword, appendices, and index, each clearly marked "Book Club Edition." NO slipcase. Gilt "ring-and-eye" device to each paper-covered front board. Each volume will close its boards as well as its text block, but we downgrade slightly to "near fine" since spines are rolled a bit, and top page edges show slight foxing. Each bears a 1978 copyright to rear jacket flap, but renewal copyrights to Christopher R. Tolkien on copyright page are dated 1982 to the first two, 1983 to the third volume. Jackets moderately rumpled to head and heel of spines. Red-and-black map endpapers. Books coded in sequence to bottom of jacket rear panels 10259, 10260, 10261. Near gutter on penultimate page of text, the first two volumes are further coded "Q41"; the third volume "Q45." While "reader surveys" often demonstrate an exasperating preference for the latest police procedurals and movie fodder, the democratic method is redeemed by its high ranking of this, Tolkien's 1956 masterpiece. It's only because we love the book that we offer a piece of advice which some may consider heresy: There is a 40-page section of "The Fellowship of the Ring" -- the bulk of Chapter 6 and then all of Chapters 7 and 8, dealing primarily with Tom Bombadil -- which are not necessary. If you enjoy them, fine. But if the first-time reader finds him- or herself bogging down shortly after page 128, be aware that nothing in this section is necessary to any later development of the plot; you may skip to the beginning of Chapter Nine, "At the Sign of the Prancing Pony," there rejoining the main narrative with no ill effects. The three volumes at 444, 350, and 447 pp., including appendices and index in the third part. Bookseller Inventory # 003848
