About this Item

Black cloth over boards. Large paste-on illustrated title box, front, smaller on spine, in cream, blue, and black. 22cm. Untrimmed page blocks, side and lower. Biography of "no ordinary man", but of Timothy Dexter, born 1747 in Malden, Massachusetts, "of poor but honest parents", but by his own words, "I was to be one grat (great) man". He was a leather dresser who became a merchant, and finally "a gentleman of Newburyport", the seaport of the Clipper ship trade era. There, his Georgian home became his self-described pleasure palace; and author J.P. Marquand, a Newburyport native, brings him and the eccentric character he had become, to life. Marquand also wrote "Point of No Return", a novel based on social strata in Newburyport, and several other 20th century popular titles. Very good. No dust jacket. A few light pencil brackets in text, erasable. First edition. 2nd printing September 1925. Bookseller Inventory # Alibris.0000733

Store Description

Hi, Folks ... Mom said, 'I need to downsize'. Moving to assisted living, what she couldn't take included 8,000-plus books & records. A decade later, my upcountry barn is bursting. Books multiply as others recycle priorities. I now have 30,000 or more books (not yet all online) looking for good homes, and my learning curve has been a roller coaster. I celebrate word-crafters, thought-tumblers, laughter ... the arts of communication at every turn. I preserve, protect, and share. I am also Hedgehog Publishing, 'Words & Pictures by & for Folks with Prickly Backs, Soft Bellies, & Small Brains'.
