As this reprint is from very old book, there could be some missing or flawed pages, but we always try to make the book as complete as possible. Fold-outs, if any, are not part of the book. If the original book was published in multiple volumes then this reprint is of only one volume, not the whole set. Book Description London: John Murray, 1817. 4to., large folding engraved map (of Africa), short closed tear, no loss and now neatly repaired, xvi + 618 + (2)pp., including the final advertisement leaf, old, perhaps original, boards, neatly rebacked and labelled, entirely uncut. An excellent, large, copy sometime in the library of The Cruising Association> (label on pastedown, small blindstamp on margin of title-page, gilt stamp on cover). First English edition (published the same year as the Hartford 1st.). 'James Riley was a native of Middletown, Connecticut. Brought up a farmer, he became a sailor and learned enough to become first a mate and then a master of vessels. On May 6, 1815, he set sail in the Commerce,> 220 tons, from the Connecticut River for New Orleans. That voyage completed, he loaded tobacco and flour for Gibraltar, where he arrived on August 9, 1815. There he loaded brandy and wine, and decided to complete his cargo with salt from the Cape Verde Islands. On this last voyage Riley failed to make enough allowance for currents - the common cause for shipwreck on the coast of Morocco - and the Commerce> struck near Cape Bojador on August 28, 1815. The whole crew reached shore with the longboat, but Arabs attacked them and forced them back to the wreck. They repaired the boat and set off in it to the south, but were forced to land again because of thirst and starvation. After this second landing, near Cape Barba, they were captured and enslaved by Arabs. Riley and a few others of his crew were sold from master to master until he became the property of one Sidi Hamet, who undertook to send him to Mogadore where he could be ransomed. After many adventures and much suffering Riley reached Mogadore in October, 1815, and was ransomed with his fellows by William Willshire, the British Consul there, for $1,852.45. Riley reached New York on March 20, 1816. Other crew members, including Archibald Robbins, were later ransomed, but four of Riley's crew were still slaves when the book was published.'
