AJS: During the eighteenth century craftsmanship in Paris was maintained at an exceptionally high level under circumstances which were uniquely favourable to the development of all the luxury arts. In furniture-making the guild system encouraged specialisation, and raised technical skills to a degree of refinement which has never been equalled. The ebenistes and menuisiers principally responsible for making furniture were ably assisted by a host of other craftsmen specialising in carving, gilding, bronze-casting, lock-making, upholstery, etc. Seller Inventory # 11078
