Book Description Boston Crosby, Nichols, & Co. 1859, 1859. An early reprint of the first American edition. With six impressive coloured lithographic plates 8vo, in the publisher's original blind embossed green cloth, the spine lavishly gilt decorated and lettered. iv, [1], 260 pp. A nice copy of this now very elusive biography replete with colour lithographic plates. The cloth is very well preserved, still firm and fresh with strong hinges, the spine just a little bit mellowed but very attractive, the text just a little bit toned. SCARCE biography in English of King John III, remembered in Poland as the "hero king", and his beloved wife, whom he undoubtedly loved more than the throne and tended to obey, at times blindly. When, prior to his coronation, he was pressured to divorce her and marry the former Queen as a condition to gain the throne, he immediately refused. History best remembers him as the victor at Vienna, where he defeated the Ottoman invasion. The Pope hailed Sobieski as the "Savior of Vienna and Western European civilization.".
