About this Item

(24)pp., accordionfold, with two four-page inserts sewn in. One of five copies, signed and numbered by the artist. A miniature artist's book by Sue Huggins Leopard based on the poem by Emily Dickinson, which reads: "Love is anterior to life, / Posterior to death, / Initial of creation, / and / The exponent of breath." Following the text are multi-colored silhouettes of faces, extending across multiple panels of the panorama. The color is created with pochoir, and the silhouettes are formed from the negative space in the color. The front of the panorama contains two groups of overlapping silhouettes facing each other across the panels. Emily Dickinson's name is printed between the two groups. The back of the panorama shows two silhouettes facing each other with a red wash of color extending from each figure's mouth, expanding across several panels, and then meeting in the middle. Bound in wooden boards hand-painted with sprinkled dots of gold and colors. Backed in raw silk, with a gilt-stamped leather band and handmade paper endpapers stamped with the word "LOVE." Housed in a paper-covered box, with a gilt-stamped leather label to the front cover, around which rosy color radiates. Inside the box, a window has been cut out to reveal a portrait of Emily Dickinson on one side and a leather label stamped in gilt with "XXXVII." Altogether a fine miniature artist's book. (Book measures 2 7/8 by 2 1/8 [73x54mm]; box measures 3 9/16 by 2 7/8 [91x74mm]). Bookseller Inventory # 26901
