About this title

Synopsis:

A new crime thriller featuring Superintendent George Gently, who investigates the brutal murder of a local poet. Could he have been the victim of a jealous lover? Or did his sparkling artistic performance earlier in the evening prompt a rival to commit murder? From the author of GENTLY DOWN THE STREAM, GENTLY BY THE SHORE and JACKPOT!.

From AudioFile:

The inspector's name is Gently, and that is how this whodunit proceeds. From the opening lawn tea to the closing soiree, the post-murder action is mainly verbal and the participants veddy British. The victim is a rakish poet; the suspects, jealous rivals and rather whiny ones at that. Alexander John makes the most of his radio training, giving identity to individuals who might not otherwise stand out. His deliverence is at times as delicate as a finger sandwich. Those whose taste runs to edge-of-the-seat thrillers are likely to be bored, but those with the patience to appreciate a genteel approach will enjoy this quiet puzzler.
