About this title

Synopsis:

This novel is based on real events the author observed during the Cultural Revolution and her days of manual labor in the countryside. Wang takes the basic facts of this tragic tale of extra-marital love and develops them into a tale of universal power. With her rare insight and great descriptive powers, she reveals the way in which a restrictive society, the power of love can turn destructive.

They came to the stretch of the barren mountain and began their climb. She was wearing a pair of white high-heeled shoes, which made the uphill climb easy, and gradually he fell behind. She turned back and gave him her hand, saying tenderly, "come." At her tender summons his soul flew out to her.

They came to a stretch of grassland where they had been before. The grass was still yellow and the sun had not reached there. She helped him sit down and held him like a baby, rubbing her cheeks against his. After they caressed for a while she took a small bottle from her white handbag, broke the seal and fed him the contents. He drank obediently, without asking what it was. She threw away the empty bottle, petted his face encouragingly, took out another bottle and fed it to him. She gave him seven bottles then she started taking them herself... "Hold me by the neck" she whispered tenderly. He held her by the neck, his soft arms wrapping around it. He felt that it was like holding on to his mother's neck when he was very, very young.
