Item description from seller

Boudoir card measures 5 ¼ x 8 ½ inches. Title is in the negative, photographer's imprint is on the front of the card and a description of La Jolla is printed on verso. Contemporary handwriting on verso reads, "January 23rd, 1894". Mount has moderate soiling and photo has moderate yellowing and foxing. Overall good. This late 19th century image depicts the caves along the La Jolla coastline in San Diego, California. The caves have long been a popular tourist destination. In 1902 Professor Gustav Schulz dug a tunnel to one of the caves, making it more accessible to the public; prior to that time (like when this photo was taken), the caves were only accessible by boat or when the tide was very low.
