About this Item

Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782) Stipple engraving, printed in color and finished by hand by Pierre-Joesph Redouté (1759-1840) and Pancrace Bessa (1772-1835) From Traites des Arbes des Arubustes. Large paper color edition. Paris: 1800-1819. Plate mark 9 x 12 inches on sheet 10 x 16 inches. Condition: Very Good. This elegant engraving is an exquisite example of French botanical art at its zenith during the early nineteenth century. The leading botanical artists of their time, Pierre-Joseph Redouté and Pancrace Bessa, created this volume as homage to the early botanical scholar and artist Louis Duhamel du Monceau. Duhamel du Monceau was a horticulturist of the 18th century, and among the most important French writers on fruit, plant physiology and agriculture. These delicate, hand-colored stipple engravings by Redouté and Bessa illustrate flowering trees and shrubs. The use of the stipple engraving technique along with the detailed coloring makes these engravings distinctive of Redoutéís work. Pierre Jean Francois Turpin and Pierre-Antoine Poiteau issued a new edition of Duhamel du Monceauís Traite des Arbres Fruitiers in 1807, which covered all of the fruit trees. ***If you frame up this item with Arader Galleries you can take a 50% discount off the listed price of this work of art.***.
