About this Item

Herbst, [Ernst Friedrich] Gustav (1803-93). Das Lymphgefassystem und seine Berrichtung. 8vo. xvi, 363 [1]pp. Gottingen: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, 1844. 209 x 130 mm. Boards c. 1844, worn esp. at corners and extremities. Foxed and browned throughout due to poor quality paper, but very good. With the signatures of Wilhelm His (1831-1904), R[obert] S[ydney] Cunningham (b. 1891), Florence Sabin (1871-1953) & Henry Swan (b. 1913) on front free endpaper. First Edition. Herbst's study of the lymphatic system included his experiments demonstrating the appearance of starch particles in the lymph and subsequently in the blood of dogs after massive ingestion of starch, a phenomenon named the "Herbst effect" in the German literature. This copy has a distinguished provenance, bearing the signatures of histologist / embryologist Wilhelm His (numerous G-M citations, especially G-M 1107 on the histology of the lymphatics), hematologist Robert Sydney Cunningham (G-M 909), histologist and public health activist Florence Sabin (G-M 909; 1113), who performed important research on the development of the lymphatics, and the American surgeon Henry Swan. Hirsch. Ogilvie, Women in Science, pp. 153-56 re Sabin. Debus re Swan. Bookseller Inventory # 29238
