The letter reads "My dear fellow Delegate: Enclosed is a copy of William S. White's book The Professional: Lyndon B. Johnson. I found this book on our President so interesting that I thought you, too, would enjoy reading it. The President has personally autographed this copy for you. I am looking forward to seeing you at the Convention in Atlantic City in August. Sincerely, John M. Bailey (signed in facsimile)". The recipient of this inscribed copy - James H. White), both Texans, met in Washington in 1933, when Lyndon Johnson was a Congressional secretary and White was a reporter for the Associated Press. Over the years their friendship became close and permanent. As a result there is probably no one in the United States who understands better than William S. White the early influences which formed Lyndon Johnson, the techniques and qualities which earned him a dominant position in the government, and the view of life and of the political process which make him so well qualified to occupy the White House."
