Synopsis: Every artist who makes a new contribution to art suffers from two forms of difficulties: one arising from his inner condition, the other from the world around him. From the ignorance of the outside world the painter can remove himself by a stubborn disdain and a firm belief in his own aims. But the inner doubts are more difficult to overcome; the more critical and hard the painter is with himself the more he seems to impede his own advance. Never - so her thinks - is any work so great as he had hoped to make it. Yet, the further in fact the work is advanced, the more difficult it becomes for the artist to recognize it, because in the process of creation he himself and his vision have undergone changes and advanced in step with the work. The painter who sees the finished picture in front of him is not the same man who began it. The finished work fails to satisfy the higher demands now made upon it and a feeling of powerlessness takes hold of the creator. The greater the advance - the greater the doubt. From this conflict arise the sudden hope and the growing desperation. Doubts and hopes alternate from day to day. Feininger could write, "A future dawns on me - I shall not have lived in vain," and four days later, "I search in vain for a single work of mine which could last."
