Period style Quarter Leather. 8vo, 312 pages, 24 cm. In Hebrew with commentary in Hebraicized German. Zhitomir, a small city in contemporary Ukraine and one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, was home to a vibrant Jewish community during much of the 18th century. Because Russian authorities considered the city to be a Jewish capital of sorts, they permitted one of two printing presses in the kingdom. One of these, the Shapira printing press, was operated by three brothers Hanina Lipa, Aryeh Leib, and Joshua Heschel Shapira, beginning in 1847. This machzor is thus one of the earliest printings from the Shapira press. OCLC lists 1 copy worldwide (FAU) . CD 000172833. Pages are soiled otherwise Very Good Condition. (HEB-48-8A).
