Book Description Flu Press, United States, 2011. Paperback. Condition: New. Aufl.. Language: English . Brand New Book. Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Malangatana Valente Ngwenya was a Mozambican painter and poet. He frequently exhibited work under his first name alone. He died on January 5, 2011 in Matosinhos, Portugal. Born in Matalana, a village in the south of Portuguese Mozambique, Ngwenya spent his early life attending mission schools and helping his mother on the farm. At 12 he went to the city of Louren o Marques to find work, becoming ball boy for a tennis club in 1953. This allowed him to resume his education, and he took classes at night, through which he developed an interest in art. Augusto Cabral, a member of the tennis club, gave him materials and helped him to sell his art. In 1958 Ngwenya attended some functions of Nucleo de Arte, a local artists organization, and received support from the painter Ze Julio. The next year he exhibited publicly for the first time, as part of a group show; two years later came his first solo exhibition, at the age of 25. Seller Inventory # KNV9786138016267

Book Description Mkuki Na Nyota Publishers, Tanzania, 2003. Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Malangatana is one of Africa s greatest painters. Best known for his dramatic paintings, he has produced a broad range of works in diverse media -- drawings, murals, ceramics, and sculptures, as well as poetry and music. For the most part his works are commentaries on the historical and political events in Mozambique, and on the experiences of colonialism, the anti-colonial struggle, civil war, and independence. They also explore broader themes of violence and resistance to violence, capturing the hardships of human life and manifestations of human dignity. This superbly illustrated book of Malangatana s paintings is a showcase of his work. The paintings are accompanied by two introductory essays, one on the artist s biography, the other a critical essay situating the paintings and the importance of his work in context. To date only available in Portuguese, this English-language edition provides the opportunity for a wider audience to gain an in-depth appreciation and understanding of the background and meanings of the paintings.
