About this Item

First Illustrated Edition. 8vo. (21 cm.) [8]3-288p. Frontispiece and other drawings by Wilfred Jones. Translated by W.H. Blake. Pictorial endpapers. Blue cloth with a vignette of a pine tree covered in snow in white and gilt on the front cover and the spine, letters in gilt on the spine. Born in France in 1880, Louis Hemon "is best known for his novel on French Canadian life, MARIA CHAPDELAINE. The work has been a subject of controversy in French Canadian literature since its first appearance, and its popularity has risen and fallen several times throughout the years." "In 1911.[Hemon immigrated] to Canada. After traveling through Montreal and Quebec city, Hemon settled in Lac Saint-Jean where he worked as a hired hand. His experiences in Lac Saint-Jean led him to write his novel MARIA CHAPDELAINE. The novel was published posthumously; in 1913 Hemon died when he was hit by a train while walking down the wrong side of the tracks." "Larry Shouldice wrote in DICTIONARY OF LITERARY BIOGRAPHY, 'The story is at once simple and moving, structured on the rhythm of the seasons and providing an accurate description of life and work on the farm and its northern surroundings. Hemon's somewhat naturalistic vision marks a shift away from the excessively romanticized "terroir" (land) novels, and is thus an important precursor of the later growth of realism in Canadian writing.'" [CONTEMPORARY AUTHORS].
