About this Item

.as Illustrated by the Lives and Personalities of the Marquis De Sade (1740-1814) and the Chevalier Von Sacher-Massoch (1836-1905). London: Andrew Melrose, Ltd., 1951. Faint speckling to the mainly Very Good cloth. When this book was published it was still possible to be imprisoned for writing, publishing, or distributing such subject matter. It thus tries to fob itself off as serious history, and it's partly that, but such books were also designed to titillate as much as could be gotten away with, so the more extreme incidents in the lives of the world's most famous sadist and masochist are given considerable focus. The historical context for their lives is also elucidated in such a manner as to reveal the underbelly of French culture. Two illustrations (portraits of de Sade and Sacher-Massoch). Indexed. The Melrose edition catalogs in the $30 to $65 range. Bookseller Inventory # 2010
