About this title

Three young couples marry for practical, rather than romantic reasons in 18th century London

From Library Journal:

In this tedious Regency, when the man Clarissa loves marries an heiress instead, she accepts a "marriage of inconvenience" with Alexander. They go their separate ways in society, meeting rarely. Eventually, this unsatisfactory arrangement becomes a romance. Subplots abound, none well developed, and none completely resolved, involving a gambling father, a wicked bastard brother, a marriageable but rather silly sister, and a young woman devoted to the uplift of the poor. The Regency as developed by Georgette Heyer was noted for its gaiety, its wit, and the charm of its heroines, always pushing against the constraints of their social roles. This book is sadly lacking in those characteristics. Marylaine Block, St. Ambrose Coll. Lib., Davenport, Ia.
