About this Item

(TRADE JOURNAL) MARTINEAU & SMITH'S MONTHLY CIRCULAR. Birmingham: January 31, 1874-December 30, 1876. 4to. Publisher's cloth. 36 issues. The first 22 issues unpaginated; issue 23 paginated separately 1-12 pages; issues 24-36 sequentially paginated 1-288 pages with a name change, "Martineau & Smith's Monthly Trade Circular." A rare English Victorian trade journal with no copies recorded in American libraries on OCLC. It was originally launched by the Birmingham hardware wholesaler. The magazine was renamed, Hardware Trade Journal, and changed from monthly to weekly publication in 1900. Over the following decades it became the major wholesaler business magazine for its market. It was renamed DIY Week in 1988. The 36 issues we have were published monthly and sold to retailers of hardware and like products. In the first issue Martineau & Smith state: "In issuing the first of our monthly circulars, we wish our friends to understand that we should like it to be of real use to them. We therefore propose to make room for advertisements for assistants, &c. free of all charge, and shall be glad to help our friends in any way as media of communication." The following issues include numerous articles and advertisements on a variety of items mostly illustrated and priced, including baths and toilet ware; Imperial Cassionbury croquet; Improved new patent wrought-iron portable forge, etc. Inserted are smaller flyers and specialty catalogues of products produced by Martineau and Smith mostly illustrated and priced. The later numbered issues of the Monthly Circular include even more advertisements from Martineau and Smith and also include numerous other British manufacturers of various products including bell founders, close and open fire cooking ranges, cut nail manufacturers, wrought welded boilers, mowing and reaping machines, etc. Bookseller Inventory # 39351
