Book Description Johnson Meyer, Redwood City, California, 1964. Cloth. Book Condition: VG+/NF. Dust Jacket Condition: VG/VG+. First Printing. Two unnumbered volumes in bottomless slipcase. The slipcase is in Good condition showing edgewear, scraping, and sporadic bubbling. The first volume (Walter Keane] is Near Fine: the off-white boards with green titles are unworn, the binding and hinges are secure and straight, and the pages are clean and unmarked. There are glassine covers on some of the color plates. The VG (or better) dust jacket is bright and whole whole showing just light edgewear at the spine tips. There is a glassine dust wrapper protector that is chipped and torn. The second volume [MDH Margaret Keane] is Near Fine: the off-white boards with green titles are unworn, the binding and hinges are secure and straight, and the pages are clean and unmarked except for a very light indentation on the first few pages. There are glassine covers on some of the color plates. The Near Fine dust jacket is bright and whole. There is a glassine dust wrapper protector that is whole showing some wrinkling and edgewear. The publisher is listed on the dust jackets as "Johnson Meyers", but the copyright page indicates that the publisher is "Johnson Meyer". This 2 book set is infamous due to Walter Keane taking credit for his wife's (Margaret Keane) work. Many of the plates in the Walter Keane book are undoubtably his, like the self-portrait "Backstage" shown on the back of the dust jacket, but all of the plates with the "big eyes" theme are actually Margaret's work, and when you compare these plates in the Walter Keane book to those in the Margaret Keane book, the pretense is obvious (but judge for yourself). Margaret Keane left Walter on November 1964, and then divorced him in 1965 (this book was published in 1964) and publicly proclaimed in 1970 that she was the painter of all the "Big Eyes" paintings, and publicly challenged Walter to a "Paint Out" that he declined to attend, instead publishing an article in "USA Today" asserting that he was the real artist of the "Big Eyes" work. Margaret sued USA Today and Walter for slander and won her case when she produced a "Big Eyes" painting in front of the judge and jury in 53 minutes, while Walter declined to produce one (for comparsion) at the judge's request. Margaret Keane's story was made into the film "Big Eyes" in 2014 by Tim Burton (himself a collector of Keane's work). Walter Keane is referred to in Wikipedia as an "American Plagarist". Overseas buyers please request a shipping quote before ordering this heavy 2 book set. Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Trade. Bookseller Inventory # 001078

Book Description Johnson Meyer Publishing Company, Redwood City, California, 1964. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First edition. Forewords by Eric Schneider and Elton Fiscus-Powell, respectively. Two volumes. 92 illustrations, including 60 in full color. An important pairing of monographs on Walter (1915-2000) and Margaret (b.1927) Keane, who rose to prominence in the 1950s with a series of widely-reproduced paintings depicting vulnerable waifs with enormous eyes. The paintings were in fact solely the work of Margaret Keane, which she revealed in 1970, five years after the couple divorced. Their marriage and the subsequent slander trial inspired the Tim Burton film Big Eyes (2014). Quarto. Original cream cloth bindings, with brown titles. Internally crisp and clean. Minor crease to the front flap of either dust jacket. Accompanied by the original glassine overlays and the publisher's pictorial slipcase. Better than very good. Bookseller Inventory # 62759
