Dates: First & second issues (Surgical vol first part (1875), Medical vol 1, part 2 (1879), Surgical vol 2, part 3 (1883) state "second issue" on title pages). 1870--1888. Original full green cloth covers w/ gilt title on spines, moderately edge worn (particularly to corners & spine ends) and covers rubbed. Vol 2 part 3 rebacked: modern green cloth spine piece (with original spine piece mounted) & repaired hinges, Vol 1 part 1 & Vol 1 part 2: water stain damage to rear cover edges & part 1 spine has insect surface damage. Surgical vol 2, part 2 rear hinge cracked; Medical vol 1 part 2 both hinges cracked; Surgical vols 1 & 2 front upper joints starting to split; Medical vol 1, part 3 hinges tender yet sound. Pages: majority lightly age-toned, but a minority moderately so (Surgical vol, V2, part 1 pages moderately toned throughout & some lower outer corners dampstained). Occasional scattered foxing on page margins; but Medical vol 1, part 2 front matter: table of contents, list of plates & rear matter index pages foxed. Pages: rear table of content pages & rear endpapers dampstained upper gutters; Full page chromo- & tinted lithographic plates; heliotype & mounted relief photo (Woodburytype) plates. I have a count of 190 plates; appears to be complete, perhaps 1 or 2 plates missing. In Medical vol 2, part 1: plate lower outer corners dampstained, slightly affecting a few plate images; in Surgical vol 2, part 2 one loose plate laid-in; worn & torn, 1 Woodburytype photo image chipped & cracked. Also, in-text line illus. Tables in vol 1; graph plates in Medical vol 1, part 3. Plates: occasional scattered foxing on margins, plate verso, tissue guards, and adjacent pages. Plate paper: lightly to moderately age-toned. Woodburytype photos by Ward & Wm. Bell, printed by T. Sinclair & Son & American Photo Relief Printing; Heliotypes by Osgood & Co.; many chromolithos by J. Bien after Ed Stauch & Faber. Tissue guards worn & folded. Surgical vol part 1 has Salem Hospital ex-Library bookplate & Surgical vol 2 has Mercer Memorial Library stamp on title page & library numbers on spine. Overall condition for this 6 volume complete set: Good. **PERSONAL NAME PLATE ON FRONT PASTEDOWN ON LATTER SURGICAL VOLUME: ISAIAH BEE / PRINCETON, W. VA.** Dr. Isaiah Bee had just begun his medical practice in northwestern Virginia (later West Virginia) when the Civil War started. In June 1861, he enlisted in the CSA, 31st Regiment, Company C. He served as a private until September 1862, when he was appointed as a regiment assistant surgeon. In February 1863, Dr. Bee was made full surgeon.
