First edition (per matching dates upon title and copyright pages) INSCRIBED, SIGNED, AND DATED BY THE AUTHOR. 135 pages. Hardcover: H 19.25cm x L 13.25cm. Original cloth with some rubbing and mottling, mild sun fading to spine cloth with bumping at frayed spine ends, gilt stamping to spine and front board remains fairly bright, beveled-edge boards. Author's three-line ink inscription on front pastedown "Presented | To Nathan Patterson | By Richard Richardson" with another ink inscription of four-lines upon rear flyleaf recto: "Presented | To Nathan Patterson | By Richard Richardson | 3 month 27, 1873." Ink ownership inscription at top of front free endpaper recto of noted American geologist William E. Davies (1917-1990) with pencil signature of inscribee Nathan Patterson on verso. Light toning at page edges; some foxing to frontispiece b/w portrait and its tissue guard; some scattered soiling to pages as well. Binding slightly stressed between frontis and title page but otherwise reasonably firm. A good+ copy.
