Vol. I, [2] + xxvi + 348 pp.; Vol. II, [2] + 384 pp. Bound in full calf with gilt borders to boards; spines in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt, with contrasting black title label, gilt. Some foxing at beginning and end of each volume, including plate margins; otherwise a very good clean copy. Loosely inserted: manuscript continuation of Hutchinson pedigree on blue paper and another small manuscript addition fixed to verso of printed table. Illustrated by 3 engraved plates, including 2 portrait frontispieces and by folding genealogical table. The manuscript of the Memoirs held by the Hutchinson family was first published by the Rev. Julius Hutchinson (1751?-1811) in 1806. It includes the Life of Lucy Hutchinson (b.1620), written by herself, and her biography of her husband, Colonel John Hutchinson (1616-64), soldier and politician and puritan. He served as MP for Nottingham county, and later city, and was military governor of Nottingham Castle and town, which he successfully held for Parliament. Although a regicide. he was pardoned after the Restoration which he supported; accused, however, of involvement in a plot, he later died in prison.
