John Guthery, an officer in the Revolution. She was orphaned at age twelve and taught in the local schools for many years. During the Civil War, she gathered and sent sanitary supplies to the Union armies and visited the sick, and was given the name "Mother Stewart" by the soldiers. She helped organize the first woman's suffrage organization in 1869 in Springfield, Ohio, and she was also active in charity work. But her main interest lay in the fight against strong drink. In 1858, she became a charter member of the Good Templar Lodge and later formed a Women's League in Osborne, Ohio, the first organization in the Women's Christian Temperance Union movement. She was active in the movement in the United States and in Great Britain, the rest of her life. She died in Hicksvile, Ohio, August 6, 1908. See the Dictionary of American Biography.
