About this Item

5 x 7 in. 464 pgs, plus Harper's adverts. G. G. Evans listed as publisher on title page, Harper and Brothers ads at rear and HB binding, this is an uncommon edition of the American first edition. Original textured brown cloth boards with blindstamped HB on cover, gilt lettering on spine. Condition is GOOD+ ; corners and ends of spine bumped and worn. Spine cocked slightly with gilt illegible, the covers and spine are very clean. Binding is tight. There was clearly an issue with water at some early date - the title pg and first 100 pgs of text show varying degrees of water marks, getting progressively less noticeable in the latter pgs, and then hardly noticeable after pg 100. The text also has some mild to moderate foxing, getting progressively less mild towrd the rear pgs. One of the iconic works of the 19th century, and a fascinatingly curious edition. Fiction.
