About this Item

192 pages, profusely illustrated with b&w photographs by W. Eugene Smith. "Minamata is a fishing and farming town on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu. Its people joined the industrial age when the Chisso Corporation built a chemical factory there. An uneasiness developed in the town in the early 1950s. Many individuals fell ill with the same symptoms: limbs and lips tingled and then became numb; speech slurred; motor functions were out of control. Some died. Minamata's disease was recognized as methyl mercury poisoning from industrial wastes. The mercury reached people through contaminated fish." This book is an important document telling and showing the suffering the people of Japan experienced. FINE- HARDCOVER, GOOD DUST JACKET, dust jacket protected with a clear plastic acid free jacket. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 014935
