About this Item

8vo. 31p. Illustrated with reproduction of a full color painting by Peter Stevens which shows a young Hatian girl holding a sheaf of wheat (?). Highly decorate initial letter "T" in the text. Orange paper over boards with gilt letters on the spine and with a vignette in gilt on the front cover of two palm trees. Dust jacket has a large black and white photo of Hugh B. Cave. Just hints of wear to extremities, spine gilt very slightly dulled, cover gilt bright, covers clean and bright, frontispiece fine, else fine with no internal markings. Dust jacket spine has a couple of small rubbed spots, is price-clipped else near fine. Hugh Barnett Cave [1910-2004] was a frequent contributor to THE SATURDAY EVENING POST, in which this story first appeared and is well-known for other writings. "Six-year-old Yolande St. Juste could not understand her mother's dying or really accept that she was now alone in the world. Walking along the dusty Haitian roads to Port-au-Prince, over 90 miles away, to find her artist father, the little waif could not know that this father had existed only in her mother's imagination. This is the story of a brown-eyed girl, small in years, but big of courage, her journey, and how she affected everyone she met, even the liars, the cheats, the wantons. Told with a quality of innocence and simplicity, THE MISSION is a little classic of great emotional appeal." [from the dust jacket] Additional jacket title: A Little Classic of the Spirit.
