Pictorial maroon dust jacket well rubbed, some creasing/bumping at panel edges with two tears to front panel, abrasion and wear at spine ends and along flap folds, staining to rear panel with several patches of surface peeling. bottom corner of front flap is price-clipped; dj now presented in a mylar Brodart protector. Maroon cloth, light staining to rear board, spine's gilt stamped lettering remains vibrant. Touch of soiling and a few small light stains to edges; pages 309-319 have shallow stains at their bottom fore-edge corners. Front free endpaper has five-line gift ink inscription from "Hilliard and Mary Hunter" with the latter credited as a researcher in the book's Foreword; short handwritten ink notation at upper spine margin of pages 2-3; no other such markings readily apparent upon a quick perusal and interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. A very good- copy in only a good dust jacket. With frontispiece, Foreword by Vera Jacobs Speakes, b/w illustrations throughout, plus "Notes on Mississippi Portraiture" (pages 10-16) and "Notes on the Artists" (pages 315-326) by Estill Curtis Pennington.
