About the Book

Bibliographic Details

Publisher: New York: Dodd, Mead And Company.

Binding: Hardcover

Book Condition: Very Good

[n.d., 1898, as per BROADFOOT noting an unauthorized edition of this with this pagination.] 264pp. Original full brown pebbled calf, original spine laid down, owner’s name ‘C.W. Brown’ in gilt at bottom of spine, below four ruled compartments with title and author’s name in same typeface. Some edgewear and expert repair to front free endpaper. Solid condition. Brown’s ink notation on front free endpaper: ‘The corrections and alternations in this book were made by Col. Mosby in his own handwriting. C.W. Brown.’ Signed by Mosby in black ink on front free endpaper, and on four additional mounted photographic plates tipped into the book, all of Mosby in different period poses in Confederate uniform. With dated notarized “Letter of Authenticity’ of James Spence Authentication, the nation’s premier autograph authentication house, noting each autograph done by hand in ‘Steel-tip fountain’ pen. Plates in fine condition, though the first, on the front endpaper, has short tear at top, nowhere near the signature. What initially interested me about this book was its binding. It was clearly something special gotten up for an individual with more than a passing interest in reading about Mosby. When I had the chance to examine it, I knew instantly it was something very special. The autographs are in dark, flowing black ink, the photos themselves are among the most iconic ever taken of Mosby. Some in-text manuscript corrections, presumably done by Mosby. NEVINS II, 78: ‘Originally a series of lectures printed first in newspapers and later in book form.’ DORNBUSCH II, 1288. NICHOLSON p.528. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-14081524234
