About this Item

good+ cord bound paper book / edges very worn with chips, creases, and closed tears / some pulling out at tied cord / water ring on front / very age toned / gift inscription in front and another inscription on next page / 14 drawings, 3 1/4 by 4 inches, mounted in center page and having a small text underneath by the illustrator, Elias Kanarek with a preface by James Laver / one page has pulled out and had an attempt to tape it in place but the tape has peeled off so page is laid in / can send scan / "The Pickwick Papers, as we know, were Dickens' creative reaction to a publisher's idea of setting an artist to work on a series of drawings which should portray that priceless human product of England's capital, the Cockney. It is indeed characteristic of the Pickwick Papers that it is one of the few masterpieces of literature which would be unthinkable without their graphic complement. Good graphic portrayal of Pickwickian characters and scenes needs therefore no apology. We believe, and if the assurance of many English friends be conclusive, we know, that we have found in Mr. Kanarek---who, as an illustrator of children's books has since long won a place in the hearts of Poland's childhood---an artist equal to the task of re-creating the Pickwickian atmosphere, as dear to us here in Poland as it is to you in England.".
