About this title

In the evolution of the art of every nation reciprocal influences have invariably played a greater or lesser part. This was certainly the case with the Byzantine art which was raised on foundations laid by the ancient world. Byzantium inherited the realistic traditions of the Classical world but it also cherished and developed the idealistic canons of the Christian Church. These influences were also experienced by the peoples who inhabited the islands of the Mediterranean and the Aegean and by the nations of the Balkans and Asia Minor; they are influences which persisted almost into the second half of the nineteenth century. Throughout that period when Byzantine art was developing, the art of other Orthodox countries also advanced and flourished to a greater or lesser degree, depending on the locality and situation.
