About this Item

260 pages. A comic novel set in the fictional town of Avalon, Connecticut. A clergyman finds the town's memory of his late wife an impediment to future happiness. First edition (first printing). Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Inscribed by the author, 'To John Marquand, in at least partial return for pleasures received. Peter De Vries.' While many such inscriptions between authors are insincere, in De Vries' subsequent novel, The Tents of Wickedness, one of his characters reads Marquand (winner of the Pulitzer Prize and author of the Mr. Moto mysteries) 'with enormous pleasure.' A nice association. Bookseller Inventory # 96710
