About this Item

Paperback octavo, very good condition, black & white photos, top corner tip front cover creased. 309 pp. This is the inspiring life story of Louisa Lawson, the Australian poet, publisher, feminist and social reformer. She is best known as the mother of Henry Lawson, but Louisa Lawson deserves acknowledgement as Australia's first prominent supporter of women's rights (though untidy in her personal life, and possibly suffering a mental illness). Fictionalised, but sticks close to the facts where available. Bookseller Inventory # 15566

About this title

Synopsis:

Richard Handley tells the courageous story of Louisa Lawson, a leader in the fight for women’s rights and a significant character in Australian history. He highlights the great courage she showed in coping with her problems and the determination and fighting spirit in confronting male chauvinism and the subjugation of women in nineteenth-century Australia. Louisa emerges as the foremost feminist writer of her day and as a gifted poet. In the past, her reputation has suffered and her importance has been ignored, with the biographers of Henry Lawson, her son, painting her as a careless, uncaring, and sexually repressed wife. Richard Handley’s That Mad Louisa has addressed that situation, highlighting her championing of women’s welfare and equality, her Australian patriotism, her inventiveness, publishing and journalistic qualities, and her charitable works.

About the Author:

Richard Handley has been an admirer of Henry Lawson’s work from his youth, after reading about Louisa Lawson, the author went to Mudgee, researched her life, and wrote this book to redress the prevalent view of Henry’s mother in an attempt to clearly establish her place as one of the grand figures of Australian history and a pioneer of the women’s movement. Richard lives in Paddington, New South Wales.
