Book Description Createspace, United States, 2014. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 229 x 152 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Toward the end of the US Civil War, General W. T. Sherman began a scorched-earth campaign known as his March to the Sea. Beginning in Chattanooga, Tennessee, he and his 62,000 troops moved down through Atlanta, Georgia, and then on to the east coast at Savannah, then up through South Carolina. This would become the bloodiest, costliest military campaign of the Civil War and bring an end to the conflict - but at great cost to the South s people and its pride. Just outside Atlanta lay a small town called Madison; for some unknown reason, Sherman made an exception and did not burn Madison to the ground as he did so many others. Several legends exist about precisely why he spared this town; some involve pro-Union politicians, others say that the town was too beautiful to burn, and another suggests that a beautiful woman was somehow involved. Saving Madison is a fictional account of this event that entwines all three legends to make a powerful story. A young girls innocence, betrayal and then her eventual redemption are interwoven throughout a colorful tapestry of war, suffering, loss and human drama. Learn about who General Sherman really was - the man behind the war destruction. Immerse yourself in the manners, society and simmering conflict of those years as you read and enjoy Saving Madison!. Book Description No Publisher, Milwaukee. Pamphlet. Book Condition: Fair. no date, presumed early 1900s. 8 page pamphlet. A short piece arguing for the establishment of sanatoriums for those affected by tuberculosis, citing statistics of those affected, cure and treatment rates at other sanatoriums (including statistics from Germany), and the ill effects on society caused by the sick. Much of this last part is based on conjecture, hypothesizing the effects on the family of a sick male, where the family lives in a 'hovel,' the wife is forced to work, as is the eldest daughter (speculating the wife also becomes ill and dies, leaving the children to the penal system). FAIR/GOOD condition. Wisconsin Tuberculosis Association stamp on the outside cover, with a faint note in pencil also present. Minor pencil corrections in the text. General browning to the paper, with a 3 1/2 inch horizontal tear affecting the pages at the center fore edge. Bookseller Inventory # 006805
