About this title

A collection of ten well-known ballet stories including, Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, and others.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 4 Up-- Berger interprets many of the ballets that children are often taken to see. All of the tellings are lively, but "Coppelia," told with a deft comic touch, is particularly well done. The contrast with such tragic heroines as Giselle, Juliet, and the Swan Queen is a relief. Occasionally the language is stilted, but translating the physical language of dance and performance onto the printed page is not easy. The faces and the elongated figures in the watercolor illustrations are quirky, a sharp contrast to the elegant beauty of most ballerinas and dancers. Although not as inclusive as Untermeyer's Tales from the Ballet (Golden, 1968), the language in this volume is livelier and some of the tellings are more true to the way in which the ballets are danced today. An introduction gives a brief history of ballet in general and of the ten stories in this collection. --Frances E. Millhouser, Reston Regional Library, VA
