Miniature Book. 2 7/8 x 2 1/8 inches. 70 pp. Half-title, frontispiece arms of King John, printer's device on the colophon; text clean, unmarked. LIMITED EDITION of 1,250 copies, printed by Joh. Enschede en Zonen in Haarlem, The Netherlands, in Eric Gill's Perpetua type on handmade Hayle paper of Hayle Mill Maidstone, England. Bound by Proost en Brandt in Amsterdam. The Magna Carta (The Great Charter of Liberties) guaranteed church and aristocratic rights be protected from encroachments by the monarchy. The Magna Carta is an English charter originally issued in the year 1215 which included direct challenges to the monarch's authority. The document required King John of England to proclaim certain liberties, and accept that his will was not arbitrary. It was the first document forced onto an English King by a group of his subjects in an attempt to limit his powers by law and protect the privileges of his subjects. The translation of this text is taken from Facsimiles of National Manuscripts, part i, (1865), pp. 20-22. PROVENANCE: Charlotte Tamblyn Tufts (1912-2010) was born in New York City and educated at Sweet Briar College in Virginia. She and her husband, Nathan A. Tufts, Jr. moved to Burbank, CA in the 1930s. Charlotte received a masters degree in library science in 1963 and developed the Western History Room of the Burbank Public Library and was also librarian at the research library of the Southwest Museum in Highland Park, CA. Subsequently Charlotte Tufts worked for rare-manuscript dealer Doris Harris as assistant, and eventually partner. Tufts retired from employment with Doris Harris at the age of 80.
