About this Item

This is not a book, but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm vinyl LP record. Disc is near mint -- silver print on black label. Cardboard jacket is very good, retaining full luster front and back with no "ring" wear, but showing considerable wear and separation to bottom and closed edge. Jacket identifies this as Miranda "Album 1917," but disc label says "Album No. 5657." Simpkins performs "Diane," "Marie," "Them There Eyes," and eight numbers credited "Miranda Publishing" including "I Long for You" and "I Resolve." Cover shows a smiling Simpkins in tuxedo. On the white shirt front he has inscribed in blue ballpoint: "To ohara / Best Wishes / Arthur Lee Simpkins / The Poor Mans Sammy Davis." Simpkins was a powerful vocalist with the Earl Hines band and made a few film and TV appearances 1951-1953, but information on him is otherwise scant. Only inference we can draw RE date of this album comes from absence of any reference to either mono or stereo, as well as Miami newspaper column on back cover by Paul M. Bruun, which refers to Simpkins as "probably the best ambassador for the colored race I have yet met." These would seem to indicate a 1950s release. This is a signed monaural (mono) high fidelity vinyl LP album, not a book. Reduced from $60. Bookseller Inventory # 001373
