About this Item

A remarkable presenation copy from Soby, Director of the Museum of Modern Art, to S. Lane Faison, Director of the Museum of Art and Art Professor at Williams College, with TLS from Soby to Faison, commenting on dealing with Magritte in planning the MOMA exhibition, which is the subject of this title. Inscribed affectionately on the ffe: "For General Jodie and Corporal Lane Faison, / Affectionately - Jim / James Throll Soby". The letter, dated Dec 3, 1965 and typed by Soby on his personal stationary form his home in New Canaan CT is single-spaced and covers completely front and back. It touches on professional items (e.g. a museum job recommendation for a Faison student), personal concerns (an inquiry about Mrs. Faison's recovery from a foot operation), and art goings-on (a Fairfield Porter show in Southampton). Most notably, Soby writes about Bill Paley, who apparently dedicated to collecting only early Matisse and Picasso now "(is) hound(ing) me to take him around to the galleries to see the work of the younger Americans" and, with bemusement, about Magritte: "But really that magritte! I write him a simple yes or no question and get back a twelve page letter about his theories on art. . I'm now trying to arrange his vist to New York for the opening of his show at the Museum. He won't leave Brussels without a) his derby hat and b) his dog" . Soby relates an amusing anecdote about a dog he took along on an Antlantic crossing and concludes "I think I'm getting a little to old for art or dogs but I seem to be like a punch-drunk old prizefighter. Selz and Slez having departed our ranks in the Museum, I had to come out of my corner, pawing the air when the bell rang." Near fine book - some underlining and marginalia by Faison - in near fine unclipped dw. Bookseller Inventory # 006734

Store Description

Johnnycake Books trades in rare and collectible books of most kinds, principally in fields of literature, illustrated, childrens, architecture/design, gardening and photography. We try to offer books that are a little unusual, offbeat and unexpected: most have a strong visual or design appeal. Our descriptions present our inventory as creatively and colorfully as possible, with occassional editorial commentary. We regard condition of our books as critical to our service: most are very good or better, in collectible condition. We are generally conservative in describing a book, even if that means it doesn't sound as good as it actually might be. We welcome your comments directly at johnnycake@snet.net or visit our website www.johnnycakebooks.com. Best wishes in your book collecting. Dan Dwyer
