About this Item

The Maid of the Mill. A Comic Opera in Three Acts as performed at the Philadelphia Theatre. NY: David Longworth at the Dramatic-Repositary, Shakespeare-Gallery, 1817. The author produced many successful pieces including Love in a Village, 1762, and the original Maid of the Mill, 1765. He ultimately fled abroad, suspected of a capital crime and died there in degraded circumstances about 1812. His plays departed from the ballad opera (set to old tunes) and travelled toward the comic opera (set to new ones). The book has soft marbled paper covers, 3 1/2 x 6 inches, 80pages, with a straight tear of approx 2 1/2 inches at foot of spine, a few chips to edges of covers. Good+ copy.
