About this Item

Introduction by Christopher Morley. Beautifully illustrated with wood engravings by Freda Bone. New York: Cheshire House, 1932. Quarto, hardcover, handsomely bound in quarter green calf and marbled boards, enclosed in a slip case. 147 pages, with wood engravings printed from the original blocks. One of 1200 copies on fine rag paper printed by Richard Ellis. A fine copy in a lightly worn slip case. A beautiful edition of this famous work. Originally published in 1619, "The Maides Tragedy" is generally accounted the best of Beaumont and Fletcher's dramas. "To narrate the plot is to expose it to the chilblains of incredulity, or at least reduce it to the level of a gangster feud. The virtue of the play does not lie in any net residue of belief but in the golden gross of its fervent and irrelevant poetry." (from the Introduction by Christopher Morley). Freda Bone is an English wood engraver whose work has been compared to that of Joan Hassall and Gwendolin Raverat. The six books she is known to have illustrated all appeared in the 1930's, but little else seems to be known of her work, and the present title is not mentioned among her works in Alan Horne's "Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators.".
