About this Item

Blue cloth with black title block and gilt lettering and spine decoration in leaf patterns. Hint of rub to head and heel of spine. Text is clean and bright, no marks. Made of two distinctly different kinds of paper. Map decorated endpapers and illustrations throughout by Henry Bugbee Kane. Arranged and with notes by Dudley C. Lunt. "After discovering the spell of the Maine woods, Thoreau made three trips to Mount Katahdin, Moosehead Lake, the West Brank of the Penobscot, Lake Chesuncook, the famous Allagash Rover, and the East Branch in 1846, 1853, and 1857. There was much to see, whether it was the ubiquitous Lilium canadense or the horrible spectacle of his guide butchering a moose. He noted the "civil-looking" elms which still stand as you enter West Branch. He observed stump fungus, luminous at night, and speculated about it. Mud Pond Carry, the island where he had lunch, the spot where the moose was killed, the clintonia, the painted trillium, the flowered bellwort, they are all still there, and the moose are coming back.".
